Journey into Online Business

A few years back, I spent some hard earned cash and hired an internet marketing consultant. I had already created a service based website for my online radio advertising agency. I had achieved my goal of quitting my day job, which I did on December 31st, 2003.

Since my business was doing very well, I wanted to expand my online earnings by building a product based website. I had the cash so I decided to hire a consultant who had a higher level of expertise than I did at the time. I needed to draw traffic to an e-commerce website selling products.

It wasn’t a total waste of money, but the truth is – I just wasn’t ready to do it all over again. I had spent the last five years building my online ad agency. While I was living my dream of working full time at home, it was still work.

With a service based business, everything depends on you to get the job done.  Even if I hired out some jobs, I still had to be at the helm.

What I was looking for in a product based business was more freedom. Something that would provide income even while you sleep. When you create a website the right way – one that gets high traffic – and you set up a profitable system to sell your goods, it goes into auto pilot.

Of course, there is a ton of preliminary work to be done to get your website to a point of steady profit. I just wasn’t ready to exert a focused effort on a new website. I was like a lot of people who think it will be a little easier.

Every Website Needs Traffic and the Right System

It needs to be repeated that to have this type of success, your website needs traffic. It also needs a profitable process in place for making money. Getting people to your site is only the first step. Making sure your conversion rate is profitable is a different story.

This is why I thought I needed a consultant. And don’t get me wrong, the right consultant can take you to new heights of success. Some only take your money however.

If you do the proper keyword research and you have a passion for what you are doing, you need to move ahead with confidence.

Some online home businesses start making money in the first couple of months. Others take a little longer. In addition to keyword research, you also want to make sure there are already competitors making money as well.

If there is no competition, then there’s a good chance there is no market at all.

The benefits of niche markets and micro niche markets is that there is less competition. If the traffic potential is there, there after you’ve done your keyword research, it will be easier to make money sooner in a niche market.

If a market is highly competitive, it will take longer. Even more important to build your online business with the right process.
