The process begins with the written word about your product, service, or main website theme, followed by researching and added related products. Keyword Research

There are many avenues to explore when you start to work on your internet based business. Once you have a list of ideas that interest you, you will need to find the answer to this question:

Is there a demand online for my product, service, or information?

Keyword research is simply discovering what search terms people are typing into the search engines to find whatever it is they are looking for. Fortunately, Google offers a great FREE keyword analysis tool that is easy to use. Here’s how it works.

First, go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

After conducting your initial search, the first thing you want to do it select “Exact Match” on the left hand side of your keyword search results. This is found in the “Match Type” drop down box on the left. Selecting “Exact Match” provides search data on the EXACT series of words that you type in. Without going into detail on the differences between Broad Match and Phrase Match, an Exact Match is vital in determining how much actual traffic potential there is for any online business venture.

Type in your main business idea, product or service into the search box. It can be a single word or a phrase. Click the “Global Monthly Search Volume” heading to sort the highest number of searches in order from top to bottom. Keep a note pad handy and write down the terms and how many searches are being conducted on a monthly basis. Try various combination of words related to your idea and track results. Categorize your keywords in to 3 groups. High traffic keywords and keyword phrases (i.e.: 2000 exact match searches per month and up), medium traffic keywords (approximately 1000 to 2000), and low traffic keywords (under 1000).

It is important to keep track of results on a note pad (or cut and paste results into Word or Notepad on your computer) because different keywords and keyword phrases produce different results. What you are attempting to do is develop a list of the top keywords that are generating traffic from at least a few hundred people each month.

For example, a keyword phase such as “work at home business” will produce different results than the phrase “work from home business”. Just as a the phrase “online home business” will produce different results than if you typed in “home based business”.

If you are researching niche markets where there is less than 1000 Exact Match searches per month, you will want to use multiple keywords to generate higher combined traffic numbers sufficient enough to build traffic to your site.

Keyword Competition Values

As you are conducting your keyword research you will also want to keep track of the competition values which show up just to the left of actual keyword results.  You may have a home business idea that has a low number of let’s say, 1000 searches per month on one of your keywords, but the competition value is “medium” or “low”. This can often be better than a traffic results of 25,000 monthly searches with a high competition value.

It is difficult in one article to explain all the necessary variables that you need to consider when conducting keyword research. My instructions are very generic as every market is different. The purpose of this article is give you an idea of where to start. If your business idea produces virtually no traffic with multiple keywords, then you will need to try researching another keyword theme.
