Google Adsense Revenue

Google Adsense is just one way to make money from your website. Your first priority should not be setting up Adsense ads on your site. You need to first build traffic.

With any internet based home business, this law is universal:

No Traffic – No Revenue.

Of course, it won’t hurt to put Adsense on your website once the template and initial content is created. I would suggest however that you don’t sit and wait for the revenue to pour in. Once your Adsense code is installed, it’s time to focus your efforts on building traffic.

What is Adsense?

Adsense was developed by Google to extend their pay per click network to other websites. Adwords came first, which was the placing of text ads on Google’s main search page listings. This program was created for “pay per click advertisers”. These advertisers can pay pennies per click to have their ads show up on Google.

Adsense is for “pay per click publishers”. A publisher is someone who owns a website and places Google Ads on various pages on their site and receive a percentage of the pay per click revenue being paid by the original advertiser.

Google called it the content network and it was the dawn of a new way to make money online.

To clarify, Adwords is a means for online businesses to promote their products and services on Google and the content network (which are sites other than Google).

Adsense is a means for legitimate work from home business owners like yourself to display those ads on their websites and earn a percentage of the revenue.

You do not need an Adwords account to run Adsense on your site. They operate as separate programs with different criteria when signing up. After creating your Adsense account and getting approval from Google, you can log in and create ads of various sizes for your own website. Google provides you with a code to place on your website which will inturn produce ads on your site that is similar to your site’s content.

You can choose from text only ads, text and image ads rotating, and image only ads. (Rotating text and image ads doesn’t mean your ads will be rotated 50/50. Text ads make up most of the ads. It simply means that image banner ads may run in place of the text ads from time to time).

Adsense ads come in variety of sizes for your website.

These ads are in the shape of your typical banner sizes:

  • Leaderboard (728 x 90)
  • Banner (468 x 60)
  • Half Banner (234×60)
  • Skyscraper (120×600)
  • Wide Skyscraper (160×600)
  • Small Rectangle (180×150)
  • Vertical Banner (120 x 240)
  • Small Square (200 x 200)
  • Square (250 x 250)
  • Medium Rectangle (300 x 250)
  • Large Rectangle (336 x 280)

There are a few additional sizes to choose from for image only ads.   With text links Adsense ads, a number of text ads appear within the banner size.  It varies depending on how large the size of each ad.  You can see samples from with in your Adsense Account.

The content of your Adsense ads (what people see) are related to your domain and and the content on your site. The code you place on your pages allows Google to read your page and make sure there are relevant ads displayed. There is also a way to remove certain ads that are showing up using the Competitive Ad Filter which is in your account.

The Adsense program features additional ways to make money online including Link Units, which are links to a list of ads, Adsense for RSS Feeds, Adsense for Search, Adsense for Domains, and Mobile Content.

The most lucrative form of Adsense ads are the text ads, especially for beginners and intermediate online marketers.

Signing up for Adsense is easy. As with some pay per click programs, you do not need to be approved to run Google ads once you agree to certain terms.  To sign up go to Google’s main site and select Advertising Programs.  Choose Google Adsense on the left side of the page and proceed. Don’t get confused and select Google Adwords. This is for online business owners who want to promote their product through Google.
