Make Money Working at Home

A friend of my wife asked me a question the other day which I found rather odd. “Can you really make money on the internet?” It thought it was a little strange because she knows that I work full time at home. She is also well aware that I make 100% of my living through website traffic and have been doing so since 2004.

Now before you think my she’s missing a couple of marbles, let me elaborate on her frame of reference which lead her to asking the question. You see, I operate a “service based business”. While all of my clients come to me through my website, a service based home business does not make money until you actually do the work requested. That said, it’s still considered to be a legitimate work from home business.

All I need is a computer, a website, and system of building regular traffic.

What my wife’s friend was really asking was this. “Can you make money online selling products or through advertising?” This is the traditional way people think about online home based businesses. The selling of ‘anything and everything’ you can think of.

It’s a fair question. And while deep down we all believe there are people who have made millions simply working from home on their computer, most of us are skeptical. There’s a good reason for this skepticism. The simply fact of the matter is that there have been many more people who have tried and failed, than there have been those who have succeeded.

In my niche industry, I’m a rare breed. I started my online home business within my area of expertise, offering radio production services through my online advertising agency at www.radiocreative.com. All of my clients come in through my website, and I deliver my service back to them via email, all while working from the comfort of home.

My wife’s friend, who I will call Jane to protect the innocent, is like most people. They don’t think of the full possibilities of what you can do to make money working at home online. It just seems too easy to be able to build a business with only a computer, a domain name, web hosting and a website. Jane wasn’t really thinking of my home business as an internet marketing venture. You see, I could technically be providing my service locally. I wouldn’t even need a website if I had enough local clients.

Unlike many home based businesses who operate offline in the real world, my website is not just an extension of my home business. It “IS” my business.

What Jane didn’t know was this. I possess no offline sales skills. I couldn’t sell a glass of water to a dying man in the desert. Without the internet, I wouldn’t even have a business. I’d still be working for a company for a meager monthly pay check, which I did for 10 years before the internet came along.

The other thing Jane didn’t know was that I also make part of my income through the sale of products and through advertising revenue on information based websites which I created. So I was able to tell her from experience, “yes, you can make money online working from home.

What do you need to build an Internet Based Home Business?

There’s a long answer to that question, but let’s start with the basics. You need traffic. You need people to find you online and visit your website. So in the case of e-commerce websites and information based sites, you need a website that works well in the search engines. How do you do this? You need to know the process of building a website the right way. You need to know how to promote it through various techniques.

You can start with paid traffic, but eventually to succeed, you need free traffic. It’s the kind of traffic that websites get when people type in their keyword terms in Google. Getting ranking at the top of Google is the goal.

In a nutshell, whether you want to start a service based business around your expertise, or an e-commerce site selling affiliate products, or a information based site centered around your hobby – you CAN make money on the internet. How much?
