On the internet, we refer to them as niches within a larger category. Within each niche are micro niches.

What what magazines are you interested in? Let’s say you like home decorating. It’s a big topic, so we need to narrow it down. As you glance at the magazines within that main heading, you’ll find bathrooms, kitchens, and backyards. These are niches within the main category of Home Decorating. The goal is to find a niche with less competition that is still in high demand. We will need to narrow it down again.

Let’s say you like backyards. You pick up a magazine on backyards and thumb through it. You see gazebos, backyard lighting, and backyard design ideas. Now we’re getting somewhere. I remember how hard it was for my wife and I to find a backyard design a few years back. We ended up hiring a designer to come and draw up a backyard plan for us.
