Building Effective Websites

Here are a few things I’ve learned about building successful websites over the last few years:

  1. Techniques and Technology are always changing and evolving. (Google is a driving force)
  2. Things change a lot of the time because scammers and spammers mess up perfectly good systems for the rest of us.
  3. You simply must keep up to speed with current trends and techniques to keep your traffic rolling in.

The list could be longer, of course.  I am continually learning new things about how to build traffic and keep my sites up to date.

Building a website takes a focused effort from the very beginning.  Once it’s up and running the way it should be, you can always take it to new levels of success.  There is always more traffic to be had.  Always more money to be made.

If you already have a website, here’s a check list of things you may want to review to make sure you are up on your game.  For those who are new to online marketing and are considering the idea of an internet business, I encourage you to read my article on Site Build It, which is a program that guides average people through process – step by step.

The process in building a successful website is mind boggling. Even for experienced webmasters, unless you follow a linear method, you will find yourself to be scattered all over the place.  It’s easy to missing key steps in the process which only weakens the effectiveness of your site.

Of course, it’s never too late to make improvements and fill in the gaps if you have found you’ve missed something.

  2. Tweet about your new websites content. (Repeatable)
  3. Post about your new content on Facebook, Forums, Friend Feed, etc.
  4. Submit your RSS Feeds to muliple RSS Directories.  If you don’t have an RSS feed, you can also create them for your website and submit.
  5. Create an Ezine Article. (Can Repeat Many Times)
  6. Publish your Ezine Article’s URL into a submission program like Traffic-Bug.com
  7. Create Scribd Document. (Can Repeat Many Times)
  8. Publish your Scribd Document’s URL into Traffic-Bug.
  9. Create Squidoo Lense. (Do once per niche and update content often)
  10. Plug your Squidoo Lenses URL into a submission program like Traffic-Bug.com (Do this only once per Squidoo Lense)
  11. Create a HubPage. (Do once per niche and update content often)
  12. Plug your HubPage’s URL into a program like Traffic-Bug.com. (Do this only once per HubPage)
  13. Build a Tumblr Page about your site. (Do this once per niche)
  14. Plug your Tumblr Pages’ URL into Traffic-Bug.com (Do this only once per Tumblr Page)
  15. If your niche and content isn’t spammy try adding your site to DMOZ (Once per niche)
  16. If you have unique content about a specific niche try adding your link to Wikipedia as a resource. You have to be careful not to spam. If you offer true quality content you can receive a high value backlink and decent referral traffic. (Do only once per niche)
  17. Search for blogs in your niche and make comments on them placing your backlink in your comments. Keep track of sites you have already visited. Make at least 5 comments. You can also view other Squidoo Lenses and Weebly pages commenting on their sites as well. (Repeat this step often)
  18. Posting videos on YouTube and other free video sites is another great method to improve rankings.

In regards to video, here is some information on how to get your website and videos on page one of Google.

I am not endorsing all of these techniques.  I use some of them, but to be frank – to implement all of them in full is to spread yourself too thin.  Make sure your website itself does not suffer neglect in the process.

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of Traffic-Bug.com. I use it to submit my urls as well as individual articles and to submit my RSS Feeds.   With out a software program, submitting RSS Feeds is painstakingly slow.  Read more about how to do it quickly here.

The web is always evolving.  A lot of these avenues for promotion did not even exist five years ago.  Only with the dawn of web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo and Hubpages, and social sites like Facebook, have these techniques been implemented to help increase page rank for your website and it’s content.  The same goes for RSS feeds for blogs, and the creation of RSS feeds for static websites.

I am not a huge fan of social sites.  Again, they take a lot of time and effort to maintain.  Your online business needs you to succeed.  It is also debatable as to whether or not social sites even make you any sales.  Perhaps for multi-level marketers they are fine.  As for me, I want people to first connect with my website and the information on it.  Creating relevant content takes work.

Even before you start a website for your work at home business, you need to first decide what your busines is going to be about.  Here are some idea starters.   Whatever you do, I encourage you to get started today.  There is nothing like working at home in my books.
